Toy Sewing Machine

Toy sewing machines come in two types of product. The first kind is the kind of toy that a child can use to only pretend to sew. For the very young child that needs toys to foster imagination this is fine in itself. The other kind of toy sewing machine is a machine that can actually join pieces of cloth together in either a chain stitch or straight locking stitch. Note that a chain stitch machine does not have a bobbin thread in it. Bobbin thread catches the stitches on the bottom of the fabric to prevent stitches from pulling out. A machine that is merely a chain stitch machine can join fabric in only a temporary manner. The advantage to a chain stitch machine will be the ease of preparing the machine for use – no bobbin to wind.

Even a toy sewing machine will require adult supervision and instruction if a child wants to join pieces of cloth together. A child needs to be taught the importance of threading the machine properly so it will work. They need to know where to put the fabric. They need to know how to run the machine and how to stop. If they want their project to stay together they may need help from a parent to tie off end threads if they do not have the manual dexterity to do it themselves. Nonetheless, of all hobbies or crafts a parent may sharing with their daughter or son, sewing is fun for young and old. Sewers of all ages can create a quilt or fashion clothing or accessories for themselves or as a gift for others.

Toy sewing machines can be purchased for toy prices, around $20 USD. User reviews on many machines made for kids are running fair to poor. These machines will frequently jam or quit working for any number of causes. If a child is on the cusp of truly learning to sew then adult supervision at a beginning adult machine like a Singer or a Brother may be the best value. Many adult machines come with many features, buttons and computerized attributes. To spare a child confusion, purchasing a simple machine with a half-dozen features is sufficient. A light-weight beginner's machine can make a great second sewing machine for mending and quick crafts for any adult perhaps.
